AVON — It was an exciting after-Thanksgiving game Nov. 28 as Avon hosted Plainfield and gained its first victory in its season opener 66-60.
Fouling seemed to be the game trend as both teams went into bonus in the second quarter, and into double bonus in the second half.
After a slow-starting first quarter, Avon outscored Plainfield 19-6 in the second quarter, and Avon led 33-25 at halftime.
In the third quarter, Avon extended its lead to 51-37.
Plainfield attempted a gradual comeback in the fourth quarter, trailing by just six points with 3:13 remaining in the game.
With both teams in bonus and a Plainfield post fouled out, the game came down to free throws. A Plainfield and-1 brought the score to 65-60 with 18 seconds to play. An Avon free throw took the final score to 66-60.
Kendall Griffin led Avon to their victory with 18 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three blocks. Juan Sarver followed closely with 17 points, and Darian Mikell tallied 11.
Plainfield’s Chris Page led the Quakers with 16 points.
