Base: Avon Defeats 4A #6 Brownsburg in 1st Round

Alex Kirby
Hoosier Authority

AVON – The 4A #6 Brownsburg Bulldogs went 3-1 against the Avon Orioles this season, outscoring them in the three losses by a combined score of 37-8. Unfortunately for them, the one loss came when it mattered most and the Bulldogs fell to the Orioles for the second consectuive season in the first round of Sectional play.

Avon came out firing on all cylinders, scoring six runs in the bottom of the first, including a three-run shot to left by Logan Sanburn.

“It took the pressure off our kids,” said head coach Clark Reeves. “We could challenge them more where we might not have challenged them as much. They’re a good hitting team.”

It took the Bulldogs until the top of the third inning to get on the board with a two-run shot to left-center from first baseman Jake Houston.

Avon came back and answered when starting pitcher Rob McPike hit a solo-shot over the fence to provide an insurance run.

The Bulldogs managed only one more run in the the top of the sixth when pinch-runnner Andrew Martin came home on a sac-fly.

“It’s really hard to beat someone three times, let alone four in a season,” said Brownsburg Coach Pat O’Neil.

“It’s not a happy moment here in Brownsburg. I’m proud of my players, they fought hard all the way through, and they never gave up.”

Avon Senior Pitcher Rob McPike got the complete game win, allowing three runs on eight hits. For Brownsburg, Mark Conover allowed six runs on three hits in five innings of work.

BT&F: Host Lafayette Jefferson claims first regional title in 25 years

By Eric Eaton
HCC Coordinator

LAFAYETTE – Thirteen days after dropping a heartbreaking 4.5 point decision to the Noblesville Millers in the Hoosier Crossroads Conference meet, the #14 Lafayette Jefferson Bronchos got their revenge against their conference rivals, defeating them by 12 points to win the Lafayette Jefferson Regional on May 22.

Lafayette Jeff posted a winning point total of 86 points, #6 Noblesville finished in second-place with 75 points, and #24 Fishers took third-place with 53 points. #15 Avon (50 points) and Zionsville (39 points) finished fourth and fifth respectively, giving the Hoosier Crossroads Conference a sweep of the top-five positions.

Click here to watch video highlights from the meet! Included in the highlights is an interview with Lafayette Jeff Coach Larry Griggs. In addition to talking about his team’s performance, he also talks about the impact Lafayette Jefferson Athletic Director Maurie Denney has had on the track program. Denney, who will retire at the end of June, presented the regional championship plaque to the team following their victory.

The Bronchos won just two events at the meet, the 400 meter relay (42.96) and the long jump by Broderick Lewis (22’7.35”). However, they made up for their lack of first-place finishes by stockpiling valuable points paying positions in 11 out of 16 events.

Lafayette Jeff will send five individuals and two relays to compete in the state championships to be held on May 31 in Bloomington.

Four athletes won a pair of individual events at the Lafayette Jefferson Regional.

Noblesville had two of double winners in seniors Tyler Hiatt and Bryan Mickler. Hiatt had a fantastic meet, setting new meet records in both the shot put (60’9.25) and the discus throw (185’6”). Mickler on the other hand, doubled up in a somewhat bizarre combination, the 100 meter dash (10.85) and the pole vault (13’11”).

Clinton Prairie senior Nick Seager won both of hurdle events, the 110 meter hurdles (14.64) and the 300 meter hurdles (39.78).

Fishers junior Drew Shields was actually a part of three victories at the meet, and two of them set new meet records. He and three of his Tiger teammates began the meet by taking first-place in the 3200 meter relay with a new meet record time of 7:53.28. Next, he established another new meet record in the 1600 meter run of 4:15.14. Then, he wrapped up his stellar evening by winning the 800 meter run with a time of 1:57.09.

He didn’t set a new meet record, but Southmont freshman high jumper Jonathan Christensen turned in what was arguably the most impressive performance at the meet. Christensen, who entered the event with a personal best of 6’5.5”, cleared 6’9” to defeat the defending regional champion Eric Post of Frontier. Post, who is a senior, also jumped 6’9”. However, it took him more attempts to clear that height, thus he had to settle for second-place.

Christensen’s performance though was made even more amazing by the fact that he fractured his back earlier in the season. It definitely is a remarkable comeback for the Mountie freshman, who’s now headed to the state meet to participate in the high jump as a regional champion!

GT&F: #3 Westfield wins West Lafayette Regional

By Eric Eaton
Hoosier Crossroads Conference Coordinator

WEST LAFAYETTE – One week after capturing the programs first-ever sectional championship, #3 Westfield won its first regional title by slipping past #18 Hamilton Southeastern 86 to 80 at the West Lafayette Regional on May 20. Lafayette Jefferson finished in third-place with a total of 52 points.

Click here to watch video highlights from the meet!

Westfield won only three events: the 3200 meter relay, the 1600 meter run by Maggie Bingham, and the pole vault by Sarah Kinnaman. However, the Shamrocks won the title with their depth as they had a combined 14 athletes and relays score points at the meet.

“We were just really steady,” said Westfield Coach Scott Lidskin. “I mean everybody pretty much just came and focused and did the job. You know we got a lot of kids out and we’re excited.”

In fact, Westfield advanced seven individuals and two relays into next week’s state finals at Bloomington.

Despite coming up short yet again to Westfield in a big meet, Hamilton Southeastern also turned in a fine performance at the Regional.

Portia Bailey led the charge for the Royals contributing to three blue ribbon finishes. The junior started the meet with a bang by winning the 100 meter hurdles with a new meet record time of 14.74. She also took first place in the 100 meter dash and then ran anchor on Southeastern’s winning 400 meter relay team which set a new meet record of 49.25. All totaled, Bailey will participate in four events at next week’s state finals as she finished third in the 300 meter hurdles to qualify for state in that event as well.

As a team, Hamilton Southeastern will have participants in seven events at the state finals. However, for the third consecutive meet though the Royals were relegated to second-place in the team standings by Westfield.

Southeastern lost by just two points to the Shamrocks in the Hoosier Crossroads Conference meet on May 6, then lost by 3.5 points in the Noblesville Sectional on May 13, before finishing 6-points behind Westfield at the Regional.

“They’re awesome,” said Lidskin of Hamilton Southeastern. “They’re well coached, they’re focused, they compete hard. It could’ve gone either way,”

It certainly was a banner evening for the Hoosier Crossroads Conference at the West Lafayette Regional as conference athletes took first-place honors in 13 of 16 events.

Other Hoosier Crossroads Conference athletes and relays recording first place at the meet were: Kenya Owens of Brownsburg in the 200 meter dash, Allison Weimer of Brownsburg in the 400 meter dash, Lorna Whaley of Avon in the 3200 meter run, Queennetta Reese of Lafayette Jefferson in the 300 meter hurdles, Channie Williams of Lafayette Jefferson in the long jump, Breann Fife of McCutcheon in the shot put, and Brownsburg’s 1600 meter relay team.

In addition to the new meet records set by Bailey in the 100 and by HSE’s 400 meter relay team there was also three other new meet records established during the event.  Southmont junior Creasy Clauser ran a time of 2:14.01 in the 800 meter run to better the previous mark by just over a second. The other two records were turned in by Kinnaman in the pole vault at 11’4” and by Westfield’s 3200 meter relay team with a time of 9:16.31. Hamilton Southeastern’s Paige Neata also turned in a vault of 11’4″ in the pole vault, but finsihed second to Kinnaman because it took her more attempts to achieve that height.

The State Finals are scheduled to begin at 3:00 P.M. on May 30 at Indiana University in Bloomington.

Note: video from the West Lafayette Regional will be posted on Friday May 23
