Realignment brings major changes for the HCC

Hoosier Authority Staff Report

Football
realignment will have dramatic effects on teams in the Hoosier Crossroads
Conference. The biggest of them all is that the league is now entirely
comprised of 5A schools. Zionsville and Westfield are two of the teams jumping
to the big school class.

The other
significant change is that all ten conference schools will now be split into
just two sectionals. Seven HCC schools will join Carmel in Sectional Four. They
include Fishers, Hamilton Southeastern, Harrison, Lafayette Jeff, McCutcheon,
Noblesville, and Westfield. That will move several of the schools from the
southern semi-state to the northern. The remaining three HCC teams, Avon,
Brownsburg, and Zionsville, will be in Sectional Six. That, of course feeds the
southern route to the state finals. Included in that field will be perennial
power Ben Davis.

A Perfect Season and Day for Chase’s Sydney Parkmond

The day was a perfect one for Chase Girls Varsity Basketball and especially,
junior captain, Sydney Parkmond.  Parkmond, a Waterbury native and four year
starter for the Highlanders, led her team to it’s sixth New England Title but
also scored her 1,000th point as a high schooler and was named the game’s Most
Valuable Player.

“This is just great,” explained an elated Parkmond after the game standing
along side her very proud parents.  “It was the perfect
day and one that I will always remember. “

Coming into the season there was an outside shot that Parkmond would reach
the 1,000 point pinnacle in her junior year, but she would need to have some big
games and she did just that.  Averaging a little over 14 points a game all
season, Parkmond had several games with 20 and even a few with 30 which put her
in the running to eclipse the infamous point total, which most high school
basketball players that achieve this feat need the full four seasons.

Coming into the game, Parkmond only needed six points and she did not waste
any time as she got her first basket on a layup in transition, the second on a
quick pull up in the lane, and the third on an offensive rebound in traffic, a
typical Sydney Parkmond basket.  After the third basket, the game was stopped
briefly and Director of Athletics, Matt Lawlor announced to the crowd that
Sydney just reacher her 1,000 point and head coach, Ray Behr presented her with
the game ball.

“I am so proud of her as she has worked very hard for this,” added Behr.
“This is quite an accomplishment for Sydney but I am not surprised at all as she
can do just about anything and has been a model of consistency and hard work in
her three years playing for me.  I am just glad to have her back for one
more.”

After the fanfare cleared and the game resumed, Parkmond was not finished as
she led her team to the title and finished the day with 14 points and 16
rebounds.  With that effort, Parkmond was named the Most Valuable Player in the
game and put an end to a storybook season for the Highlanders.

2009 Kent School Girls’ Basketball NEPSAC Class A Champions

On Sunday, March 8 Kent School’s Girls’ Basketball team defeated Phillips
Academy by a score of 49-29 to notch their second straight New England Class A
Championship.  Led by tournament MVP Jayde Bennett our girls capped off an
undefeated season in dramatic fashion with a suffocating defense that stifled #1
seeded Andover from start to finish.  Congratulations to Coach Walton and the
entire squad for representing the very best of Kent Athletics with their
determination, dedication and skill throughout the 2008-09 season.

2009 Canterbury School Girls’ Basketball NEPSAC Class C Champions

In an exciting and well played game, Canterbury led 23-22 at the half after
coming back from a 5 point deficit. Krista O’Gara put in two clutch
baskets in the last minute of the first half to put the Saints up for
good.

The Lady Saints slowly pulled away in the second half. Marly
Silverman
put in 6 points while MacKenzie Watt scored 4,
O’Gara 9 and Clare Fitzpatrick 16.  Ariana Della Torre
contributed 5 clutch assists with some terrific passes.

At the 11:00
minute mark Canterbury had a 4 point lead, with 9:00 left they had a 33-41 lead
and with 6:25 left they had stretched the lead to 14 with a game score of
52-38.  Holderness came back as they hit some 3-point shots but it was too
little too late as the Lady Saints won 60-54.

Clare Fitzpatrick
was named the MVP of the Championship game; she ended with 23 points. Clare
has been the heart and soul of the Canterbury Basketball program for four years
and it was fitting that she end her prep school career leading her team to the
New England Championship.  Clare finishes as the all time leading scorer in both
boys and girls basketball.

Krista O’Gara finished with 16 points,
Ariana Delle Torre 7, Marly Silverman 6, Kelsy Nagle and
Mackenzie Watt each had 4 points.

Congratulations to Head Coach
Sarah Ferland and Assistant Coach Bill Shaw and the entire team. Well done!

2009 Chase Collegiate Girls’ Basketball NEPSAC Class D Champions

The Chase Collegiate Girls Basketball team defeated the MacDuffie School
(Springfield, MA) 55-31 Sunday afternoon to earn their sixth New England title.
The Highlanders were looking sharp all game as Ray Behr’s squad put an
exclamation mark on their perfect, 25-0 season.

Chase started a bit slow in the first few minutes as the nerves of playing on
the big stage was a bit overwhelming as both teams missed open layups and turned
the ball over.  However, once things settled down Chase was dominant
throughout.  The Highlanders were able to do what they have done all season and
that was capitalize on their aggressive defense which turned into scoring
opportunities on the offensive end.

“I thought that the girls would be a bit nervous at the start,” said a very
proud Ray Behr.  “But I wanted us to be sure that we would come out with an
aggressive style of play defensively to set the tempo and we did just that.”

In the first few minutes MacDuffie played Chase to a standstill but once the
Highlanders got going it was all Highlanders, all the time.  Sydney Parkmond (14
points, 16 rebounds) and Onyesanom Nolisa (15 points, 11 rebounds) led the way
for Chase as they were both dominant on the backboards and were too much for
MacDuffie inside.  Parkmond, who scored her 1,000th career point in the first
five minutes of the game, was named the game’s Most Valuable Player.  Chase had
several others contribute in the effort as sophmore’s Savannah Holness and Gabby
Mouzon netted 10 points and Nekia Mulley added six.

“It was a total team effort and a great season.  The girls got along with
each other so well right from the start and it showed down the stretch as we hit
the tournament,” added Behr.  “These girls worked so hard to accomplish this
goal and demonstrated such enthusiasm at all times.  It was a special
season.”

As the final horn sounded there were smiles all over Highlander Nation as
coach Behr gathered with his players and congratulated them on a great game.
Several Chase faculty and parents were on hand and as it was a great day to be a
Highlander.

“This is just great,” said Director of Athletics Matt Lawlor.  “To accomplish
a New England title and a perfect season all in one day is special; not many can
say they did that.  I am so happy for these girls, Coach Behr and this program
as they have been targeted all year and were able to finish unbeaten and NE
Champs is impressive.  Highlander Nation is proud.”

After the game Sunday afternoon the Chase team boarded their bus and made the
trip back to Waterbury as the school starts it’s spring vacation for the next
two weeks, and, for the girls, they will have time to enjoy this sixth New
England title.
