King’s Briana Brown in Feb. 16 Issue of Sports Illustrated

Junior basketball phenom Briana Brown is featured in
“Faces in the Crowd,” a weekly section of Sports Illustrated magazine. Briana is
the Vikings all-time points leader, and has scored more than 1,500 points in her
high school career. She says the recognition by Sports Illustrated feels
great.

“I’ve worked really hard,” she said, “but it’s amazing to
be recognized like this.” Briana said the national recognition doesn’t place
additional pressures on her shoulders. “I have to keep pushing. I always deal
with pressure. I’m used to it.”

For next year Briana is focused on hitting the 2,000 point
mark. But for the remainder of this season, she is focused on leadership. “I
want to keep working on encouraging my teammates. That’s what I’m working
on.”

GSW: Hamilton Southeastern runner-up to Carmel at state finals

Hoosier Authority Report

The fox is
still winning, but a lot more hounds have joined the hunt. That is the story
from the Girls State Swimming Finals held Saturday in Indianapolis. Carmel won
its 23rd consecutive State Championship, and in doing so set a
national record for dominance in a sport. As usual, the team closest to the
Greyhounds was Hamilton Southeastern. The Royals swam well but were overwhelmed
427-227.

The real
story for Hoosier Crossroads Conference fans is that six of the ten conference
teams finished in the top 20. More impressively, five league teams ended among
the top 11 teams in Indiana. Noblesville was fifth with 149.5 points,
Zionsville ninth with 91, Westfield tenth with 84.5, and Fishers eleventh with
72 points.

Here is a
look at the complete and very comprehensive results from the meet.

GBB: Decatur Central struggles past Avon

Decatur Central led Avon
11-5 after one quarter of their sectional semi-final at Ben Davis. That was
enough to let folks know they were in for a low scoring, defensive battle. However,
it gave no indication of just how defensive the game would get. The 11 points
by the Hawks would end up being nearly 40% of their total for the entire game,
and that would be enough. Decatur
central posted a hard fought 29-20 victory over the Orioles. It improves the
hawks to 17-6 on the season and gives them a date opposite powerful Ben Davis
for the title. Avon ends the season at 10-13.

Defensive? Try this on for size. Avon held the hawks
scoreless for the entire second quarter until Decatur central hit a buzzer beater at the
end of the half. Still, Decatur Central led at intermission 13-9.

By comparison, the third quarter was a virtual scoring fest.
Decatur Central outscored the Orioles 5-4 during the eight minute stretch. That’s
right; this one was 18-13 in favor of the hawks heading into the final
stanza.  That is when Diana Jovanic
decided enough was enough. She scored three straight baskets for the hawks
early in the fourth period to stretch the lead to nine at 24-15. In this
contest, it might as well have been a thirty point spread. Avon
never challenged again.

Jovanic led the hawks and took game high scoring honors with
13 points. Katie Griffin battled gallantly for the Orioles, finishing with
eight points, nine rebounds, and five blocked shots.

GBB: Six HCC teams still alive in sectional play

Mike McGraw

Hoosier Authority

And then
there were six. Heading into Friday night’s semi-final round of the sectional
tournament, the Hoosier Crossroads Conference has six of its ten members still
alive. That includes all three of the regular season big guns.

First round
action saw league teams go a combined 3-4. That is a little misleading in that
two games saw HCC teams play each other. High powered Fishers dismantled Zionsville
60-37 and Lafayette Jeff put an end to a dismal season for Harrison 58-25.

Three games
saw HCC squads contest outside opposition. The conference went 1-2 in those
battles. Avon made short work of Indianapolis Tech, 52-34. Brownsburg was not
so lucky, losing a 53-28 verdict to highly regarded Decatur Central. Both of those
contests were in the Ben Davis Sectional. At Zionsville, Noblesville fell to
defending state champion Carmel on Tuesday 65-44.

The second
round will be full of challenges for HCC teams. Let’s start at Ben Davis where
it will now be Avon’s turn to try and slow down Decatur Central. The real fun
though, will be in Zionsville. Westfield, which has won 16 games this season,
will get a chance to dethrone Carmel in the first game. The second contest is a
showdown everybody has seen coming. HCC powers Hamilton Southeastern and
Fishers will square off for a trip to the finals. Whoever is left standing at
this location on Saturday night will have more than earned it.

At
McCutcheon, the host Mavericks will enter the sectional fray.  They will face off with Kokomo. Meanwhile,
how is this for a clash of titans? Legendary coaches Jan Conner and Jerry
Hoover will lead Lafayette Jeff and Logansport respectively into battle against
each other. Prospective coaches might want to take a trip up north for a free
clinic.

King Varsity Guard Briana Brown on ESPN.com

The record-breaking
performances of junior Briana Brown have again captured the eye of the national
media. On Wednesday, Briana was included in an ESPN.com story that highlighted
some of the best female high school basketball players in the nation.

The
story, which ran in conjunction with the ESPN RISE FAB 50 national girls’
basketball rankings, read in part:

“In December, junior Briana Brown
claimed the King (Stamford, Conn.) all-time scoring leader title with the first
30-point game of her career. Since then, the guard has rattled off another 88
points in four games, running her school record to 1,481 points through
Sunday.”

Athletic Director Tom Decker is pleased with the recognition
Briana is receiving, and proud that the accolades reflect well for Briana as
well as King on a national level.  “She is a great kid,” he said. “This is a
testament to her basketball ability and her talent.”
