BB: Hamilton SE rebounds from 15 down to dump host Avon, 58-51

By Jeff Hodge
Contributing Writer

AVON – Hamilton Southeastern took a beating early in its Jan. 23 Hoosier Crossroads Conference road tilt at Avon, but the Royals roared back with a 23-10 fourth-quarter effort to escape with a 58-51 victory.

Avon pushed a 6-0 lead after nearly four minutes up to 18-6 to end the first period. The Orioles then extended the lead to 21-6 on a 3-pointer by senior guard Darrian Mikell to open the second quarter.

But Hamilton Southeastern (7-6, 4-2) went on a 9-0 run over the next 2:43 to close the gap to 21-15. The Royals rallied after switching to a 1-3-1 trapping defense and forcing several Avon turnovers that turned into easy baskets.

At the half, Avon clung to a 28-23 lead.

The second half continued to be a game of runs by both teams. Avon (7-6, 1-3) opened the third quarter with a 10-2 spurt to jack the lead back up to 38-25 at the 4:36 mark, and the Orioles once again appeared to be in control.

Yet HSE continued to pressure the Orioles and clawed its way back into the game, and the deficit was down to a half-dozen at 41-35 after three. Southeastern then outscored Avon 23-10 in the fourth quarter to pull out the win.

Hamilton Southeastern was led by senior Charlie Duffy’s 15 points, with junior Zach Starr adding 12. The Royals next host Lawrence Central (4-5) Jan. 27.

Avon sophomore JaJuan Sarver scored a game-high 16 points and 6’7″ freshman Austin Burgett had 13 for Avon, which travels to Mooresville Jan. 24.

W: HCC teams face tough road in state tournament

The State Wrestling tournament gets underway with sectionals at 32 sites on Saturday, January 31st. For those not familiar with the format, it can be a little confusing. Individual wrestlers advance from the sectionals and continue on through individual regionals and semi-states on their road to Indianapolis for the finals. Only the team winner at the sectional level advances in the team tournament. They will advance to one of four eight team regionals and then on to an eight team final the week after the individual state finals.

Here is a look at the path for the Hoosier Crossroads Conference teams.

LAFAYETTE JEFFERSON SECTIONAL —Lafayette Jeff, Harrison, McCutcheon — Winner will face the winner at Twin Lakes in the Peru regional.

ZIONSVILLE SECTIONAL — Zionsville, Fishers, Westfield, Hamilton Southeastern — Winner will face the winner at Crawfordsville in the North Montgomery regional

HAMILTON HEIGHTS SECTIONAL — Noblesville — Winner will face winner at Lawrence Central in the North Montgomery regional

AVON SECTIONAL — Avon, Brownsburg — Winner will face winner at Decatur Central in the Greencastle regional.

The draw marks an especially difficult road for the cluster of HCC teams in the Zionsville sectional. They must first jump the hurdle of a tough Carmel squad in the sectional. If one of them passes that test, they will then feed into a difficult regional at North Montgomery where the likes of Lawrence North, Cathedral, and Southmont could await.

BB Hendricks County: Avon ousts 3A #3 Danville, 44-35

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director

Early in the season, Danville downed Avon in a close contest, 70-67. The Orioles learned a couple of lessons from that game.

First, they realized they needed to slow the pace in their Jan. 7 rematch in the first round of the Hendricks County Tournament. Secondly, they had to control Purdue-boundTravis Carroll, Class 3A No. 3 Danville’s talented post man and primary offensive weapon.

Consider both objectives met. Avon downed the Warriors, 44-35, on Wednesday evening.

If you are going to slow the pace, you have to have the lead. Avon accomplished that in the first half. The initial quarter ended just 6-4 in favor of the Orioles.

The second stanza was a case of runs by each team. Danville (8-2, the other loss 52-50 to 4A No. 6 Marion) opened the period with a 6-0 run to take a four-point lead. That was followed by what, in retrospect, was the most important stretch of the game.

Avon ended the quarter scoring 10 straight points and took a 16-10 lead at intermission. That ensured the rest of the game would be played as they wanted it to be.

More importantly, the Orioles held Carroll scoreless in the first half.

That was not the case in the second half. Carroll scored 11 points in the final two quarters to keep the Warriors close.

However, Avon hit the key free throws it needed down the stretch to preserve the victory. The Orioles will now face Plainfield in the semifinals on Friday night.
