Chase Collegiate: 2010 Class C Champions in Girls’ Basketball

As the waning seconds ticked off the clock in Chase
Collegiate’s 67-61 overtime thriller on Sunday afternoon in the Class C NEPSAC
Finals, Ray Behr put his arms in the air for the celebrating the program’s
sixth New England title.  The longtime
coach of the Chase Collegiate (formerly St. Margaret’s McTernan) has done it
all and then some during his 28-year tenure at the school including bringing his
program to the New England Finals 16 of the last 18 years.

“Throughout the course of the year I do not show too
much emotion, but this time I had to celebrate,” said an elated Behr,
celebrating with his team after the win.
“We battled and battled all game long and the kids really pulled
together down the stretch to get this one.
I am so happy for them.”

Throughout most of the game, the Chase girls played
from behind, and for the first time all year, found themselves down at the
half.  The Tilton School had executed
their game plan well, slowing down the uptempo transition game of the
Highlanders and maintaining control for most of the game.  However, Chase remained calm, cool, and
collected and made big plays down the stretch for the win.

The Highlanders were led by “do-it-all” junior guard
Onyesanom Nolisa, who scored 30 points to go along with 12 rebounds in the
effort. Her performance was bolstered by the steady and heady play of veteran
and senior captain Sydney Parkmond, who added 10 points and six rebounds in the
contest.  Chase also had big
contributions on the defensive end from senior Nakia Mulley and junior Savannah
Holness.  On the perimeter it was junior
Anika Mouzon and a freshman fireplug, Taylor Brady, who both hit big shots
during crunch time.

“They all stepped up today,” exclaimed Behr,
surrounded by his players, parents, Chase faculty, and alums.  “I am just so happy for them all and to come
together and pull this one out was special; since this was our 16th
trip to the finals, it really is a Sweet Sixteen Victory.”

The victory is also special because the NEPSAC Girls
Basketball Association moved Chase up a class due to their overwhelming success
last year in Class D.  Chase ran the
table last year and cruised to a 40 point victory in the title game.  The decision was an obvious one to make and
was the best for everyone involved.

“We were honored to have the girls play up,” said
Chase Collegiate Director of Athletics, Matt Lawlor.  “Ray Behr is an outstanding coach and always
wants what is best for the kids. Playing the best competition that is out there
and moving up did that for them.”

NEPSAC rules classify teams according to enrollment.
Chase is considered a big D school or a small C school and could go either
way.

“We want our teams to be challenged and moving this
program up a class was necessary,” continued Lawlor.  “To play up is one thing but to go out and
win the whole thing is an amazing accomplishment.  The entire Chase Collegiate community is
extremely proud of what this group achieved.”
