Staff report

Week two of
the season sent a clear message to teams in the Hoosier Crossroads Conference.
Beware of McCutcheon. The Mavericks roared through the Lafayette J&C Hoops
Classic, gaining momentum along the way. They began by downing highly regarded
Benton Central 50-36 in the opening round on Monday. Lafayette Jeff was the
victim in the semi-finals on Friday night by a 52-26 count. McCutcheon then
totally dismantled Lafayette central catholic for the title, 81-36. In all, the
Mavericks improved to 3-1 on the year.

Other than
the pasting from McCutcheon, Lafayette Jeff had a good week in the tournament.
The Lady Bronchos dumped Frankfort in the opening round 65-50 and took out West
Lafayette 69-49 in Saturday’s third place contest. Meanwhile, Harrison did not
find nearly as much success. The raiders lost games to West Lafayette, Twin
Lakes, and Frankfort during the week.

It was an
exceptionally good week for Westfield. The Shamrocks picked up a pair of
victories and they were both in conference play. Tuesday evening they edged Hamilton
County rival Noblesville 51-60 and they then returned Friday with a 37-31
defeat of Hamilton Southeastern. It was the only game of the week for the
Royals who are now 2-1 for the year. Noblesville rebounded Friday night with a
50-41 verdict over Lebanon and moved to 2-2 for the campaign.

Brownsburg
claimed the Hendricks County crown, and that was no easy feat. The Bulldogs
surprised 3A power Plainfield in the championship 59-52. They also dismantled
Danville and Cascade on the way to the crown. That came on the heels of an 0-2
start. The resurgent Bulldogs are now 3-2 on the year. Avon fell in the
semi-finals of the tournament to Plainfield 49-36. That came after an opening
55-47 victory over Tri-West.

Zionsville
tasted both sides of a rout during the week. The Lady Eagles dismantled
Indianapolis Attucks 60-28 during the week but then were crushed by a loaded
Hamilton Heights team 69-29 on Saturday night.

Then there
is powerhouse Fishers. They showed no weakness during the week. They pounded
Martinsville 57-34 on Friday night, took a 24 hour rest and did the same to
Lebanon 58-28 on Saturday. The Tigers moved to 3-0 on the season.

ZIONSVILLE – No. 22 Avon traveled Nov. 19 to Zionsville in search of additional respect from the state pollsters. What they received was a big dose of reality, courtesy of Zoe Mattingly and the eighth-ranked Eagles.

Zionsville swam away with the Hoosier Crossroads Conference girls meet, 113-72, and Mattingly dominated the night individually.

Mattingly won both the 50-yard freestyle (:25.40) and the 100 butterfly (1:54.98), and she anchored each of the Eagles’ victorious 200 and 400 freestyle relay units. The performance included a come-from-behind effort in the 200 free relay that featured an extraordinary finishing turn.

The win was the second in three days over an HCC foe for Zionsville, which scored a 99-84 upset at No. 3 Noblesville Tuesday.

“We have had a great start to the season,” said coach Scott Kubly. “The girls basically are starting where they left off, in terms of their times, from last season.

“I’m really impressed with the freshmen and how they have contributed to our early success.”

Next up for Zionsville is a Nov. 23 dual meet against visiting Roncalli, while the Orioles return to action Dec. 1 at Danville.
