Football: Avon team preview

By Eric Eaton
Hoosier Crossroads Conference Content Coordinator

Last season Avon finished 7-2 in the Hoosier Crossroads Conference and shared the league title with Hamilton Southeastern. For coach Dave Shelbourne’s Orioles, it was their third conference title in the last four seasons.

Offensively, Avon appears to be in very solid shape for 2008. In fact, the team returns its starting quarterback, leading rusher, and leading receiver from a year ago.

On defense, coach Shelbourne must replace the loss of 8 starters. However, the return of senior Montez Robinson, who started at defensive end a year ago, appears to be a great place to start in rebuilding a defense. Last year the 6’5″ 235 lb. Robinson recorded 69 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, and 12 quarterback sacks. Upon graduation, Montez will more than likely be playing collegiately on Saturday’s in the Southeastern Conference, as he has narrowed his final offers down to Auburn, Alabama, and Georgia.

The 2008 season opener for Avon against Hamilton Southeastern on August 23 has the makings of being quite a game. Yes, the winner could certainly go onto win the 2008 conference crown; but the fact that the game will be played in the brand new Lucas Oil Stadium even makes it that much more special. Last season the Royals defeated Avon 17-0 in the season opener.

Here’s a capsule look at the 2008 Avon Orioles
Coach: Dave Shelbourne (7th year at Avon, 32nd season overall)
2007 Record: 8-3, 7-2 HCC (co-champion)
2007 State Tournament: (1-1) beat Perry Meridian 42-28, lost to Franklin Central 30-14 in the semifinals of 5A Sectional #6
Offensive Returning Starters: 7
Defensive Returning Starters: 3
Top Players:
QB – Jake Harris-SR, 6’5″, 215 lbs. (1082 yards and 9 TD’s last season)
WR – Darvon Blackmon-SR, 6’1″ 170 lbs. (28 catches, 419 yards, 5 TD’s last season)
RB – Taje High-JR, 5’9″, 165 lbs. (176 rushes, 1000 yards, 7 TD’s last season)
C/DE – Tyler Boyd-SR, 6’2″, 250 lbs. (Junior All-State offensive lineman last season)
TE – Jeff Urch-SR, 6’4″, 220 lbs.
OG – Brad Vivace –JR, 6’2″, 265 lbs.
OT – Nick Gray-SR, 6’3″, 280 lbs.
WR – Kendall Griffin-SO, 6’4″, 170 lbs.
DE – Montez Robinson-SR, 6’5″, 235 lbs. (Junior All-State last year, 69 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, 12 sacks, 19 QB hurries)
LB – Pat Serak-SR, 6’2″, 230 lbs. (Junior All-State last year, 113 tackles, 8 tackles for less, 7.5 sacks)
2008 Outlook: “Expectations are high for the 2008 Avon Orioles. With experience back on offense especially at the skilled positions with the return of QB Jake Harris, leading rusher Taje High, and leading receiver Darvon Blackmon, the Oriole offense is in good hands.  Graduation took most of the Avon senior dominated defense but the return of three outstanding Junior All-State players in Montez Robinson at DE, Pat Serak at LB and Tyler Boyd in the defensive line should give the Orioles a good base to start the season.” – Avon coach Dave Shelbourne

Note: the HCC football team previews continue on Tuesday August 12 with the Brownsburg Bulldogs.

GG: #2 Martinsville nips #3 Columbus North at Artie Invitational

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director

MARTINSVILLE – People got an early season glimpse of the best in Central Indiana golf Aug. 7 at Foxcliff Golf Club in Martinsville, the site of the annual Artie Invitational. The field of nine schools included four of the Top 10 teams in the initial statewide coaches’ poll, and five of the Top 15.

Host Martinsville holds the No. 2 rating, while Columbus North is third, Roncalli fifth, and Avon seventh. Carmel, meanwhile, came in with a No. 12 ranking and already owning the Brebeuf Invite crown.

HoosierAuthority.com spoke with Martinsville’s Carleigh Silvers, Columbus North’s Taylor Gohn, and Avon’s Breanna Patz as well as coaches Sharon Most of Martinsville
and Jack Cooper of Columbus North – their videos now appear in the
player at the bottom of this page!

In the end, this day played out as most anticipated on the par-72, 5,417-yard course (72.5/125). Defending state champion Martinsville and Columbus North engaged in a battle that was not decided until the last golfer from either team had finished her trip around the challenging course. Ultimately, Martinsville prevailed by a slim two strokes.

The Artesians carded a 326 while the Bull Dogs ended with 328. The decision was in doubt until Columbus North’s No. 5 player, Sidney Cox, completed the final hole. Columbus needed Cox to record a 79 to tie and she gave it her very best, ending with an 81.

The drama was destined from the beginning. Playing in the first threesome of the day, Martinsville’s Carleigh Silvers carded an outstanding 76 and then waited to see if it would stand up for medalist honors. It did – barely.

Columbus North junior Taylor Gohn made the circuit in 77. That was quite an accomplishment, considering Gohn double-bogeyed the opening hole on each side. Gohn and Silvers are leading candidates for medalist honors at the state finals later this fall.

Ari Savich of Carmel was third low on the day with a 79. She recorded that despite a bumpy finish that saw her double-bogey 17 and bogey 18 after having birdied 16 to move into contention.

Roncalli finished third on the day with a score of 333. That was one shot better than Avon, with Carmel fifth at 349.

“The course played 400 yards longer than Monday (at the Brebeuf Tee Shot Tourney at Woodwind), and the girls struggled with hitting fairways and greens today,” said Carmel coach Ken Kelly. “We just turned too many mistakes into big numbers today.”

Other teams in the field included both Bloomington schools, Franklin Central, and Center Grove.

Team scores
#2 Martinsville 326
#3 Columbus North 328
#5 Roncalli 333
#7 Avon 334
#12 Carmel 349
Center Grove 359
Bloomington South 366
Franklin Central 396
Bloomington North 454

Top individuals
1. Carleigh Silvers, Martinsville 76
2. Taylor Gohn, Columbus North 77
3. Ari Savich, Carmel 79
3. Breanna Patz, Avon 79
5. Erinn Sutton, Columbus North 80
5. MacKenzie Smith, Avon 80

Volleyball: Avon team preview

By Eric Eaton
Hoosier Crossroads Conference Content Coordinator

Last season coach Scott McQueen’s Avon Orioles put together a real special season which culminated in both conference and sectional titles. Along the way, the Oriole spikers posted an undefeated conference mark and knocked off the defending 4A state champion Cathedral Fighting Irish in the opening round of the regional before being defeated by Carmel in the regional championship match.

This season Avon returns five of six starters to the floor and undoubtedly has its sights set on a run to the state finals.

One of those returning starters is senior outside hitter Katie Griffin. The 6’2” Purdue recruit is already the school’s all-time leader in kills.

Here’s a capsule look at the 2008 Avon Orioles

Coach: Scott McQueen
2007 Record: 34-3, 9-0 HCC (1st place)
2007 State Tournament: Won the Ben Davis Sectional, lost to Carmel 3-1 in the Perry Meridian Regional championship match
Returning starters: 5
Top Players:
Katie Griffin-SR, 6’2″ OH ( recorded the most kills in the conference last season with 445)

Ashley Francis-SR, 6’0 MH

Caselyn Miller-SO, 5’10″ RS
Morgan Lemkuhl-JR, 5’10″ OH (transfer from Roncalli)
